@thehypermobiledpt: What is valsalva?? You’ve probably heard or seen this in weight lifters that are lifting very heavy. They hold their breath to help them with the weight. This acts as a bracing for the spine to prevent hurting your back. A lot of hypermobile people do this when lifting anything. It increases pressure in the abdomen to help you lift things when you’re hurting all the time. The issue is, valsalva also causes a blood pressure decrease followed by an increase in blood rushing back to your body. For a potsie, this can feel super yucky. If you’re a csf leaker, this can actually cause too much pressure. The intense pressure can cause a leak somewhere in the spine. Think of squeezing a water balloon that has a tiny hole in it! This can cause the pressure in your skull to decrease, resulting in a moderate to severe low pressure headache which can be relieved immediately upon lying flat. It’s complex, but moral of the story, if you suspect pots or a csf leak, use caution with anything that can increase your abdominal pressure significantly. This means heavy lifting + straining on the toilet 💩 And if you find yourself holding your breath every time you exercise, your body may want some stability.
