@karminker: FFS I accidentally deleted a key part - 100m breaths PER GRAM of body mass (doing it this way allows you to compare different sized animals). Also, this is true across all animals but will not be specifically true for a given animal in most cases as it’s also dependent on other factors. Not been this excited to learn something in a long time! #life #meaningoflife #itsnot42 #biology #science #death #breathe #metabolism
please everyone don't apply this to individuals, they compared species. your life expectancy is not a function of how many breaths you've taken

surely do take a slow breath instead of many quick ones? this is how stress kills isn't it

i think there's a similar relationship between bladder and urethra size so almost all mammals empty a full bladder in a very close amount of time?

So breathing is the largest main cause of death. Neat!

I have always said it was related to the number of heartbeats. But this makes perfect sense. Awesome paper. Mind blown!

wait... that explains why cardio can extend life. runners have lower resting heart rates, and I assume lower respiration rates?

so I guess it's about how much total oxygen the body can churn through? we basically are born, oxidize, defend against oxidization, then die.

My brother died at 12, he must have been breathing 190 times a minute his whole life, that's more than three breaths a second! Weirdest thing, I never even noticed it.

Metabolism (and mass/size) also affects your perception of time as well. Smaller creatures perceive time slower, which is why they often seem to have lightning reflexes. So in a sense, a mouse has a faster rate-of-living because it's literally living faster.

My first thought was the opposite, slow down and take a breath, and enjoy it because you only get 100 million of them.

that chart shows a logarithmic scale which is exaggerating allot how strong the correlation appears. the difference between 10^12 and 10^14 is 1 million vs 100 million, and the spread of data points on the chart almost covers that range on the dependant variable axis. there's actually a very large spread of breaths per lifetime and the correlation isnt that strong. if it was a linear scale they used, there would be way more scatter and the correlation would be allot more difficult to see

I shouldn’t be this excited that I FINALLY knew a thing before you. This idea is the basis for a “final thought” piece at the end of one of my live shows called “heartbeats”. PS: Love what you do.

Respiration as in breathing cycle or as in the chemical break down of energy?

Brilliant! Let's set a rule - no being can own more money than thier respective total respiration cycle 😁😜x

About 20 years ago I came over a paper calculating pretty much the same, but via heartbeat. They concluded that an elephant and a mouse achieve (on a population level) roughly the same amount of heartbeats per their median lifespan. Dunno if that was later confirmed or disproved, but it stacuk with me.
