I'm Dutch, food past any date needs a check if it's safe to consume. 1: visual, if it looks fine continue. 2: sniff test, if it smells fine continue. 3: taste test, if it also tastes fine it's still good....

In Canada 🇨🇦 it's an expire date, I think the terminology is more clear by calling it an expiration date

Use by date always had a couple of days safe after if in fridge. It's a safety gap. I've been on this planet for 68 years and haven't poisoned myself yet. Inspect it, sniff it and if ok eat it.

why does a scone have a use by date, when it looks, tastes,feels and satiates just as good 2 dTs later,as the day it was bought.

no need to use the dates in the UK, everything is mouldy in a couple of days, and it's not even Aldi stuff or Lidl, even Tesco etc are the same

Where Am I? :
Just used butter tonight that was unopened but a few months past its best before date, and I'm still alive, so this advice seems to hold up 👌

Used by date is no longer safe to eat. But is this in general or did this depend on the type of preparing the meal? Salmonella for example gets killed if its exposed to higher temperature for some time.
