@cascadiaclassic: Really? 🤯 #schwinn #vintagebike #bikelife #bringatrailer The Schwinn Krate series, produced from 1968 to 1973, was the ultimate expression of the iconic Sting-Ray, drawing inspiration from muscle cars and dragsters. These highly sought-after bikes featured distinctive elements like a smaller 16-inch front wheel, a wider 20-inch slick rear tire, a "banana" seat with a sissy bar, and "ape hanger" handlebars. What truly set them apart was the top-tube-mounted "Stik-Shift" for their five-speed gearing, a unique and cool feature for kids. Models included the "Apple Krate" (red), "Orange Krate," "Lemon Peeler" (yellow), "Pea Picker" (green), "Cotton Picker" (white), and the rare "Grey Ghost." Beyond their vibrant names and colors, they offered front springer suspension and often a front drum brake, making them a premium and highly desired bike for kids of the era. Today, original Krates are highly collectible, with some fetching thousands of dollars.

They tried to make them look like muscle cars with a shifter and a back slick tire. Not motorcycles.

$86.95 + tax was a lot of money in those days. We could only dream of having one. I saved for 2 years just to get a base Schwinn StingRay. Probably for the best. That drum brake on the front was no joke. Rich kids took lots of headers.

Schwinn was actually making the bicycle look like a dragster not like a motorcycle.
