@sarahspikeston: In this house, we are pro (in order of descending preference) family preservation, reunification, kinship placement, and fictive kinship placement before we support safe permanent alternatives by unrelated folks. Even then we prefer permanent (until 18) legal guardianship and conservatorship over permanent (for their entire life) adoption. If you haven’t done the research yet to understand why that ranking is important, you’re not trauma informed yet and have no business in child welfare. The choice should be made by the child at 18 whether they want you to adopt - not a contract they are locked into and never able to annul. Will some judges push adoption over guardianship? Yes. That doesn’t mean you should be “pro adoption” - it means you might have to reluctantly accept adoption while pushes for reforms on all levels. #adoption #fostercare
