@iowastartingline: A $125 million project is transforming Des Moines' underutilized and murky river into a 150-mile recreational waterway with beach-like areas, dam improvements, and 86 connected sites. Would you swim in it? Follow Iowa Starting Line for more.
Huge waste of money. Let’s build a polluted water park?

Yikes let's spend the money to clean it first and put in long term changes via legislation to prevent it from getting worse

$20 says it gets delayed for a year or two, ends up only being about 1/3 of the size as originally planned and still goes over the original budget, and the improvements will not be maintained for more than 5 years

Yes, to keep local support you need local engagement with the river. That makes the case for those

I like the idea, but I’m not really interested in recreation in a river full of nitrates and pesticides. There’s a reason Iowa has one of the nations highest cancer rates

I mean, the Nitrates tho?

We have to accept that Iowa is a giant farm, Des Moines will never be a great livable city with that happening

I live next door to it. they've been working on that rec space on the water for two years. and hang a boat by a crane so it doesn't get stolen at night 😂 looks like they're actually making progress on it this summer tho

I don’t know about the chemicals, but feels bad to swim in it if we wouldn’t drink it.

We just did this in Cedar Falls with the Cedar River… waters still nasty, just with kayak access.

maybe if farmers quit using it for runoff of the chemicals on their fields, it would be healthier. Just a thought

The second that river floods the majority that work will be undone. Good idea but not the best place for execution.

iowa is 100 years behind the rest of the country cleaning up their water. we could have nice things, but we can't afford to buy our own politicians.

The river is gross and nobody with any right mind wants to get in it.

it will go great with the millions spent on downtown revitalization in cedar falls right next to the waste water treatment plant

Michael Gass :
it'll be closed due to nitrate levels for most of the time. it'll barely get used because of that.

This will never be a reality until farming waste is held in check and corporations like Monsanto are held responsible.

Just because you build a recreational area on the water doesn’t mean people will want to touch that disgusting water. This is a photo I took a while back of the Des Moines river, yall really wanna touch this water?
