@tiannahpedler: Really I think this is more of an intro to the topic of football, fashion, and class dynamics rather than any sort of thoughtful analysis. But I think about these things a lot and I have more to say so if people are interested I’d be happy to yap more (and more coherently) about this #footballfashion #fashiontiktok #footballculture #menswear #footballshirt

Football shirts are 100% polyester too. The price is a scam.

I don't think that "dressing up" is about the monetary value of the clothes, and has never been actually, it's about following a dress code. There are pre-beaten up sneakers for thousands of dollars but you still wouldn't be let into a fancy dress party with them on, but you would with a pair of cheap heels or second hand dress shoes. Some restaurants won't let you in with shorts on or mini dresses and you wouldn't wear jeans to a black tie wedding. Sports shirts are casual wear, not fit for dinner dates.

Spot on. It’s fascinating how the goal posts moves for “performativity” within fashion when it comes to class. Don’t get me wrong, there is a time and place for an 07/08 Utd top, but it is not worth punishing someone for it. I think it’s fine to not feel attracted to someone’s style. But it is WRONG to believe they aren’t putting effort in, or their style is not as interesting/worth the time.

But also it’s interesting what the football shirt you’re wearing says. What’s the team - what’s their history? Are they left wing or right wing etc.

The greed of clubs/kit manufacturers has unfortunately led to the rise of DHGate etc which no one really knows how exploitative their labour practices are but when the new palace shirt is £75 can’t blame people

even look at Bunberry a few years ago the middle and upper class wouldn't be caught dead in it and even though it was expensive was still seen as chavy but thats changed over the last few years as its been gentrified

As someone who did a fashion history minor, this is so interesting! What a piece of clothing means can change so quickly over the years. And hard agree that what you wear communicates something, even if you don’t think it does

Burberry and Levi's were working class and flipped. Football jersey perception is changing and that's coming from a football fan...

That scene from DWP also reminded me of a conversation I had with someone I worked with once. She was really sneery about fashion as a whole. But she wouldn’t have it that everything she was wearing was influenced by trends. From the cut of her jeans to the colour and the style of her overpriced all weather jacket, in 20 years time you’d be able to pinpoint those clothes to a specific moment in time, because, like it or not, she was still following fashions.

The amazing thing about vintage football shirts is that they contain the story of that season(s) it was used, not just the squad but sometimes become iconic for specific matches

this made me think of the fact people now think cheaper clothes look more expensive because theyre not used to the cuts, like people thinking bias cut looks weird!! also... totally plays into british class being more of an identity than a money based system!! so many thoughts!!!!

I hate Shein with a passion but that’s a whole other can of worms. A grown man dressing in a polyester sports team jersey, on a DATE no less?! That would have me leaving too. Telling me you base your dressing up clothing choices on your little hobby of watching millionaires kick a ball around for a living.
