@itshaileycurtis: Walk my reactive dog with me! Giving this walk a 6/10 on the intensity scale. Had to pivot and change out route several times with a total of three reactions. #reactivedog #reactivedogawareness #dontpetmydog #canipetthatdog #giveusspace
Something that has helped us is engagement games to help refocus first before obedience! It can help with taking the edge off enough to make real needed commands easier to follow! Some that we do are “go find it!” Which I then scatter treats on the ground in the opposite direction of the trigger, “let’s go!” (My dog is very play driven) to which I just get excited in the opposite direction of the trigger, that has eventually turned into if I’m standing behind him he actively chooses to come towards me even in the presence of a trigger! Do some fun tricks once the trigger has passed, mine loves paw and spin! Also try not to overuse commands without a break or correction between them, it makes them less meaningful to a dog. If you say her name and she doesn’t respond a correction, either a prong pop an “ah-ah” or a “no.” Then her name again, rewarding immediately when she engages. I also find it best to teach a solid “no!” Or “leave it.” With triggers and proper corrections if not followed! Remember, you want to correct the hyperfixation before the reaction, if that means a correction then a direction change quickly so be it, my dog certainly needs the break in focus, the more they react, the more it reinforces the behavior! My dog couldn’t be within a hundred yards of another dog or person without reacting and today we walked right by two dogs and multiple people with no reactions!! Socialization also helps, sitting outside away from everything and just rewarding for neutrality! Sorry for the long paragraph but I know how hard it can be and just want to help you and her out in any way I can. I wish you and your pup the best! It can be so hard! 💖

You are doing an amazing job with her! I have a reactive dog and it can be so hard to walk him sometimes but we manage. Small tip when she is reacting, this can help especially with the reactions towards squirrels is when she starts to react just stop moving. It’ll force her to have to stay in a more limited spot instead of being pulled away from the distraction. Then when she brings her focus back to you without trying to still go at the distraction then reward her and keep moving. This has worked with us, hopefully it can work for you as well if you try it. But otherwise you are doing an amazing job with her and hopefully all your training pays off

something you could try to redirect her with is if you see something she might react to coming up toss a couple treats in the ground and tell her to "go find" and instead of focusing on the reactant her attention is redirected towards the food

Why is there no muzzle for this? I get you are doing training and that is great but everyone is being put at risk.

I have a standard poodle who is reactive to other dogs on leash. I got a gentle lead collar for her and it’s helping in redirecting and keeping her focus on me and take it off the other dogs. It’s the little wins that help the progress 🫶
