Attack on titan goes beyond its story by being an obvious replication of real word issues, it questions the human condition in every arc, building upon a theme like one piece does. Its intricacies and its coherence are no where near its shortcomings, there are more noticeable issues in the plots of one piece. Attack on titans interpretation of Freedom isnt as grand as One pieces, but is more real and dark, and this is what makes it incredible. Freedom in aot is non-linear because the interpretation of freedom changes often, it becomes something unfree at some point. One piece shows the pinnacle of freedom time and time again, and that to me is redundant, and expected, so kinda linear.

your point about op is why I don't rate it as highly, sometimes the series tries to do so many things and especially when we get to a new arc we're introduced to brand new characters with brand new stories that get their stories told from start to finish in one arc and then we put it aside and repeat it in a next arc, the core group of strawhats sometimes feel neglected to tell these stories to the point they now feel like caricatures of their most basic traits

I totally understand your perspective and I agree somewhat. I wouldn’t call the themes a “mess,” I would just say they’re more shallow and the series prioritizes action and plot over diving into themes. I think that’s why AOT has slipped in mine and many other people’s ranking. But even though I don’t connect as much to the characters apart from Eren and Mikasa, I still find value in its theme of “freedom in the face of helpless oppression” and Armins realization that one cannot fix the system in their own lifetime. And freedom can only come from within in such a cruel world.

I see why your saying but in AoT the main theme is prioritizing one’s desires like Kenny conclusion said you have to be drunk on something and how Eren Erwin Mikasa Reiner all ties to this theme and have a dedicated arc for them to support it. And how the reason we humans have free will is the reason conflict will always happen in a world where ppl’s are drunk on dreams to drive them forward, political commentary, free will vs fate, etc.

Yea ngl you wouldn’t like any fantasy series like asoiaf lotr or even WoT cause AoT in its core a fantasy story and a lot of fantasy elements from Norse mythology. Also a lot of your comparisons with hxh op to AoT is preference at the end but there’s many characters in AoT that expand that dot as well not just Eren.

Personally I like that you have to enrich yourself in the narrative and intricacies of AoT to truly reach it. It fits the messy and contrarian natures of the peoples and empires in the series. It’ll take time to be immersed into that. Although I don’t think it’s that insane to grasp
