I had to fight for my aunt. They tried to place her in hospice and it was my advocacy that saved her life. She passed away last year, 6 years after they tried to place her in hospice.

as a nurse i make sure my patients, ALL of them, are treated the same. I've had many of them tell me I'm the first nurse to treat them with respect 😔

I’m a black nurse in Georgia. I see it all the time. I have do extra advocacy and monitoring when I have black patients, especially black women, because doctors absolutely will do the bare minimum at baseline

My husband had a similar encounter with the doctor. We’re black, to give context. Brand new doctor that we decided to go to because he was an ortho spine specialist and he was recommended because my husband has back pain chronically that he’s been suffering through for years, so we wanted to see if this guy would have a better opinion. My husband is the first patient of the day and this doctor waltzes into his room, Didn’t even look at his chart for more than a couple seconds and proceed to say “so what do you want, drugs?“ my husband, and I have never did an illicit drug in my life, and my husband purposely refuses narcotics because his family has a history of addiction. I had to walk out of there before I said something out of pocket to this man…because that was out of pocket

I went in a hospital with a lump on my head… then was told that it was never report. I WAS THERE FOR A LUMP ON MY HEAD WHERE I WAS DIZZY. I now have to read all paperwork and have them fix the mistakes. I almost died the other year and had to tell them I would report them about my care. They gave me a referral to a neurologist. I love my neurologist..

I nearly died from appendicitis as a white man, documentation was the only thing that got me my surgery on time (appendix burst during surgery).
Don't underestimate documentation everyone.

Be sure to get immediate copies of records to prevent “ adjustments “ also if they won’t run testing tell them to note down in the chart that they do not see a need for tests and ask for a copy. Most times they’ll authorize the tests

also i’ve heard when ppl bring up writing a refusal of treatment on charts the doctors miraculously now want to give you that treatment.

You can also request a patient advocate and refuse care till he/she arrive. Patient advocate is there Monday-Friday at most hospitals till 3-4pm!

I’m Salvi (my family is brown and from El Salvador) and I swear the medical racism and discrimination against my immigrant grandmother who spoke no English will forever make me ANGRY. She passed away about 16 years ago now

I had a doctor prescribe me physical therapy for my vascular migraines because she thought I was drug seeking and I’m literally allergic to opiates and opioids. And PT wasn’t going to help a vascular migraine. I was very young at the time and did not know how to advocate for myself

It’s hard enough as a white woman, I can only imagine how complicated and worse it is for black women. This should never be an issue!!!

I’m a well educated black woman with extensive health care experience and it happens to me a lot. Would’ve been unalived by now if I didn’t know medicine to advocate for myself. Had THREE, not one, life-threatening incidents where no one believed me but I insisted on the right care. Don’t just trust a doctor; do your research!!!
