@esakismith: Universities overseas do not make students pay for luxury dorms. organic food or football coaches making millions #fyp #highereducation #university #college #studyabroad
Exactly. Faculty and studies. And no filler courses. To get my Uk degree ‘accredited’ in the US I had to take college credits in humanities because my 120 credits in engineering was not ‘equivalent’. 6 credits in English lit (a subject I last took at 16 and aced the college credits) and suddenly I’m ‘equivalent’ to a US degree 🙄

College costs need to come down 50% for the value proposition to be appealing.

It is also cheaper because their governments invest in post-secondary education.

My university increased our tuition to build a high altitude training center for the track kids. I wasn't allowed in there, even though I was paying for it with my tuition.

as a professor, I count on solid recruitment which is very affected by our athletic programs. when we are winning, we attract more students which allows us to be more selective. more selective means better students means i can be more rigorous in the classroom

On a micro level I dont want to take away people’s college experience but on a macro level we really need to talk about how the idealized college experience prices the average student out of academia. 😭

I feel like college should have basic gym nothing fancy and definitely not spending millions on sports.

lol. Major college athletics are mostly self-sustaining. We build fancy dorms and facilities in competition; because they draw students. Our prices are out of control because cost and purchaser are disconnected at the time of selection.

let NFL invest for these college football programs. Education is very important. I wont cry if college football goes away completely

For Ohio State, the football program brings in A LOT of money that pays for other sports. It's self-sufficient. The overseas schools tend to get a lot more in taxes, which the US used to do, but stopped in the 80s with Reaganomics.

This is 100% accurate. I worked in the treasury and financial services department for a large private university, and I was sickened by the amount of money that was being poured into the sports team. There were big ticket items being spent for the sports teams, and my gosh, they were not even good! And those things were only available for student athletes.

Employees of state universities are state employees. So you should be able to look up the salary of every single employee of such a university. It should be in the public domain. That includes presidents and football coaches, who I bet are paid more than presidents.

I’m in engineering & if I studied engineering in Europe it would be harder to get a job in the US with a degree from a European university. I could get an engineering job in Europe but it would pay significantly less than in the US.

The whole idea of top management and CEOs being paid millions is ridiculous there should be no reason why a coach or a CEO of a hospital is making millions per year 😁

fun fact, one you put in the cost of coaches, extra tutors, playing spaces, practice spaces, etc. 0 schools sports programs are actually profitable. even the big ones fudge numbers to make them look profitable, but they are not.

The school I went to was d2. If was barley hanging on to that d2 title. It is so tiny and we would loose at basically everything. It always made me so mad that they would spend all this money on sports that they would not win.

The university of Minnesota just added more fees for access to facilities. They pay millions to coaches and when they retire they create a position for them in admin. We haven’t won anything of importance in decades. It’s gross

College used to be mostly free until Ronald Reagan decided he didn’t want black and brown students in CA when he was Gov. it’s not “football”. They had big time football when college was free.

I agree that there is a crazy Prioritization of sports, but this isn't always what it seems. Many athletic departments at large universities like Rutgers go OUT of their way to show losses in the athletic department. They couldn't possibly afford to pay student athletes if they were in the red. Thus crazy coaching contracts and luxurious facilities.
