They put something on the grass. Also, no need to thatch just get a mower and mow the dead grass at ground level. Seed the squares. They definitely set something on the lawn for at least a day or so.

Ya they must of had some type of event there. Maybe had some type of bounce houses or something set up there

Do nothing. Stolens are fine and it will grow back. Obviously they had area covered with something.

Might be the type of grass it is. Probably winter grass. You might have to punch wholes and spread summer grass seeds
