she absolutely knows she's morally in the wrong which is why she is being so defensive. i'm proud of Haley for standing up and being so eloquent with explaining what's really happening. i was a married to an American as a Canadian woman , our child is American. they took me to prison during Trump's first term. i was a stay at home mom.

This is the disconnect when it comes to racism. People will help out the people in their proximity but vote against doing it politically. It is not until they are personally affected that they truly understand the connection between policy/politics and the human side. This cognitive disconnect is why they can separate themselves from ‘politics’ when they get uncomfortable.

This shows how people compartmentalize empathy they’ll help undocumented immigrants personally, yet still support policies that harm them. The mother wants to feel morally good without confronting the contradictions in her beliefs. It’s cognitive dissonance at work. Kindness in private doesn’t undo cruelty in policy.
