I'm a transgender man and it's difficult to express how sad this case is, because David always knew who he was meant to be. He was used as an experiment, along with his brother; both brothers are dead because of what Dr. Money did to them.

I asked my (incredibly skilled) psychologist his thoughts on nature vs nurture and he point blankly said it’s an irrelevant question because it’s not possible to have one without the other so they cannot be separated (wasn’t in reference to this case tho so I might ask him again)

this was a surgeon dipping into psychology where he had no place to do so. nature and nurture cannot survive one without the other. this child was tortured and his parents denied his feelings and believed a surgeon. mind you, this was a completely different time. there was no Google and people used to trust degrees. sad outcome of mistrust and mis-use of power.

I learned about this in one of my Sociology classes. It fascinated me and broke my heart so much. I actually have the book, "As Nature Made Him". The L&O SVU ep inspired by the story is intense, too. :( So many thoughts about it, but I just wish David had had a real shot at being happy.

nature vs nurture is not a reliable thing. It goes far more deeper than that. you can have positive experiences in both categories and still not become a well adjusted adult. you can have terrible living conditions and be successful in life. I think genetics are important, but we can be affected by both or not as well as genetics plays a big part.
