I did 15 quick responders as a test and when there were no bites I re-wrote my letter and adjusted my pages! Now I have a couple fulls and I’m not getting immediate rejections in the timeline. Revamping is great!

a thought from an agent: 1. when I was sending resumes I sent to almost 80 agencies. these agencies had 3-30 agents each. 40 agents is NOTHING and NOWHERE near exhausting your list. make your list bigger. 2. please don't use that query tracker feature. I have ADHD. I bounce all the heck over the place. 3. Do writing conventions and in person pitches. Writers Day Workshop is a good one. take the time you need to in order to evaluate but also? 2 months and 40 agents is nothing

It took me 239 queries across 3 manuscripts and 18 months to get an agent. All but 2 were form rejections. I don’t think you can infer anything from getting a form rejection. It’s so common these days. Querying is an endurance game! Just keep going!

I just start work on my next project. Makes the rejection from the previous project sting a little less for some reason

Is this your first book, or at least first book for traditional publishing? I always try to remind myself it took Brandon Sanderson 6 books before being published. You learn something (or multiple things) with each book you write!

I'm not sure what genre you're working in, but I'd be happy to critique partner for you! It sounds like I'm at a similar point in my writing journey as you (prepping for query now.) Feel free to DM if you'd like an extra set of eyes!

You've got such a great and constructive mindset! ❤️Whatever it is, even if your work isn't good enough right now, it will be. This way of thinking about it is exactly HOW you'll improve. Having the self awareness to want to look at your own work critically again is what might get you an agent one day while someone who just sticks their head in the sand will try once and never again. Skill can be BUILT.

I believe you have a great mindset as to where you’re at. What you’re going through is hard but you’re tougher than your current position. Keep going the direction that you intuitively feel is the right way for you. Taking a step back can do many things for you and your writing. It’s a detour, but not the end of the road. I have been watching you for about 2 years now, and you inspired me then to start my path to finally writing my book and persusing traditional publishing. You are not alone on your journey and you have what many writers do not have, perseverance.

Thank you for your honesty. I’ve been struggling with the feeling that I’m not good enough either. Considering starting a proper writing course here in the UK to work on the craft before trying again 🙏 best of luck!

What if all the writers and authors stopped querying those form repliers. Eventually it would flip the tables and they have to start querying the writers and authors to have something to publish at all. 😅😅😅

As someone who has been in the query trenches for four months, I had 30 rejects before I got 4 FM requests between my two books. Sometimes it could be because the agent is already representing a book similar to yours, or they know the market won’t be looking for it. It’s not ALWAYS you. Keep working on the opening pages and make sure your query letter has a good hook line. If you need help, lmk! 💕

I queried 41 and got 40 rejections and one request a year later which I then rejected because I decided to self publish

Thank you for your honest updates! I struggle with the question of ‘is my work ready yet’ on the daily. It’s refreshing to hear someone else voice it.

Self-reflection is good, and honesty is important, but you really just need the RIGHT agent to see it.

Manuscript wish list has a feature where an agent reads your query or first pages so might be good to try that route or something similar to get another opinion outside of the editor you’ve already worked with. Good luck it’s a tough part of the journey ❤️

Can you query the same agents with a future book? I've heard you can't query the same agent. Is that only for the same book? Or....ever?

Shadow bound was amazing so you’re definitely a talented writer. You sell books in local bookstores and have a community here that loves your book. Don’t give up! 💕

The first pages have to do a lot of heavy lifting. From my time in the trenches I’ve learned if you’re doing a lot of telling and not striking the right balance of interiority and action, they’ll pass with a form.

I've been in the trenches for as long as you, and I completely understand why you're discouraged. One of my first rejections was from an agent telling me she'd request my manuscript if it was 30,000 words less, so I cut 30,000 words and guess what? She rejected it saying "not right for me" despite what she originally said about being very interested. I think it just takes time to find the right agent, and I know it's super discouraging, but you gotta keep going 🥺 Second rejection also told me to cut my word count, I did, and she sent a PR!
