@emangetalife: The illusion of choice - hijab can never be empowering #exmuslim thank you to the brilliant author who wrote this essay. Free women from the #hijab
I think Muslim women are in their right to wear whatever they want but it also shouldn’t be seen as “progressive and inclusive” because it’s not

It’s very simple - if the rules are different for men and women, then they’re sexist.

What gives me rage the most is seeing women cover head to toe in the boiling summer and men next to them with freshly t-shirt and shorts

if the woman chooses to wear it, it is empowering for her and you can’t say it’s not just because you think so. i have met a dear woman in turkey and i asked her why does she wear a niqab. she told me that all her life her value was based strictly on how she looks, that she was always compared to her friends and that she was always in the shadow of her beautiful friends. because of this, she wanted to take her own life, but she decided to work on her spirituality and decided to not allow people anymore to judge her based on her looks, but on her personality. and this was empowering for her. in a world full of superficial people, a niqab or a hijab can give you the power to stop people doing what they know best towards women- to judge them based completely on how they look. if people have the choice to wear it then it can for sure be empowering

Oh mannnn I’ve been waiting for this take my entire life as a convert. I used to wear the hijab as a girl as suggested by my parents. I couldn’t do it after a while. Too much hypocrisy. I don’t consider myself Muslim anymore

I get you can chose modesty willingly BUT it implies that a women’s body is inmodest and that her body’s value is tied down to social and religious norms.

Hijab is not a choice IT IS FARDH (mandatory), but it should not be forced upon others and governments should not force it. I wear hijab because that is what my religion asks of me.

We westerners love to teach ”Never judge a woman for her clothes” unless it’s a religious woman who wants to dress modest and practice her religion in peace.

I’m sorry but I work for Muslim women who wear a Hijab voluntarily and I will always support their choice to wear it.

my favorite excuse is "women are just too beautiful! women are just too pure! women must be protected because they're so special!" protection is defending women, not controlling.

i’m an ex muslim convert, i wore the niqab, to start with it was freeing over time as i fell into a salafi pipeline it disconnected me from my body, my expression. this was luckily without state or familial pressure. i can only imagine how bad it is for those within oppressive familial and societal structures.
