📚 Book Review 📚 Magic, Mystery & Missing Men! The Sirens by #EmiliaHart Trade Paperback 366 pages #Adult #Historical #Fantasy #MagicalRealism @Jonathan Ball Publishers If Weyward was a wave that crashed over me in the best possible way, The Sirens felt more like wading through shallow water—occasional glimmers of beauty and brilliance, but also a sense that something was just out of reach. Emilia Hart weaves a tale across two timelines: the present-day Lucy, who wakes up mid-strangle on her ex (I mean, that’ll ruin a reunion), and the 1800s sisters, Mary and Eliza, who are shipped off to Australia under devastating circumstances. Dual timelines can be tricky, but here they’re one of the novel’s strongest elements. The historical chapters sang with atmosphere, and I genuinely felt the salt air and shackles, the despair and sisterly strength. There’s also some wonderfully eerie world-building—the abandoned baby in the sea cave, the whispered voices on the waves. “The sea is full of stories. It remembers everything. And sometimes, if you listen, it speaks.” That line stayed with me—it’s a perfect reflection of the tone Hart evokes. But—and here’s where I felt the tide recede—I struggled to fully connect with the story until a major twist around halfway in. Things finally clicked then, and I found myself more engaged, more curious. Still, the journey to get there was a little slow-going. And even once I reached the end, I found myself left with more questions than closure. The threads are mystical, yes, but some felt a bit too frayed to be satisfying. What The Sirens does do well is celebrate the raw, often painful, power of womanhood. Rage, resilience, generational trauma—Hart doesn’t shy away from those undercurrents. There’s a fire running beneath the waves. As one character reflects: “They had taken everything from us. But they could not take the fire in our blood.” While The Sirens absolutely explores important themes—female rage, inherited trauma, sisterhood as salvation—I couldn’t help but compare it to Weyward, which gripped me from the first page and never let go. This one had moments of brilliance, but overall, it didn’t quite cast the same spell. Still, if you enjoy feminist historical fiction with a dash of magic and a moody coastal setting, you’ll find something to appreciate here. Just know that these waters are a little murky—and not every siren’s song will lead you where you expect. 🌟🌟🌟 #BookTok #BookTokSA #TikTokSA #Books #Bookish #BookLover #BookPorn #BookCommunity #AmReading #Bibliophile #Tsundoku #Reader #ReadersOfTikTok #ReaderTok #DogDad #MrPinkInk #MrPinkInkReads
