In 2015, before Revolut officially launched, CEO Nikolay Storonsky applied to Y Combinator but was rejected. At the time, he was low on cash and hoped YC would connect him with investors. Every VC he approached declined. Storonsky admits he wasn’t fully committed to the accelerator route, partly because he believed they took too much equity for what they offered. He applied with a “see what happens” mindset and moved forward regardless of the outcome.
