@feralrockdove: It is not appropriate to shift the labor of our hurts onto the young people. Video description: I am sitting on the floor and talking to the camera. The room is lit by a window beside me. A potted plant and the corner of a painting are in view. The painting depicts a pile of green rectangular shapes. I am a middle aged white woman with short brown hair and glasses. I have dark eyes and long thin hands. I am wearing a dark gray hoodie and light gray sweatpants
I think it's okay to point out that, to maintain a society, we actually *do* all owe our neighbors common courtesy like saying hello when they walk in the store we work at or not ignoring/staring at them when they ask questions. 🤷 it's not their fault they didn't get enough of that training, but it does actually benefit all of us and is imo necessary to combat the rampant individualism devouring us to encourage all people to perform pleasant niceties. it doesn't come easy to many of us but as you grow you realize there will be days in all our lives where that pleasant "hey, how ya doing!" is the difference that makes us feel seen and human. if they're defensive that makes sense, they're young and it's not their fault. AND they have work to do to change if they really want "community" like they talk about online all the time. the adult ones at least. the kids' parents should be stepping up.

The whole gen Z stare thing just sounds like a combination of ableism and punching down at customer service workers, and I hate it. The kids seem to be handling this crumbling society pretty well, as far as I can tell.

as a Zilleniall i truly feel like a few millennial influencesers were paid to create a generation devide because we were all vibing a little too much, and the elder millennials took the bait hook, line, and sinker.

Thank you for saying this! I’m a 54 y.o.mom of three Gen Z and also a college professor of mainly Gen Z students. The young people I know are so thoughtful and evolved compared to we were at their age. I hate the punching down. We’re just repeating what other generations did to us.

im older gen z and i have nothing but empathy for the younger generations. they are living in truly unprecedented times with social media, education and community resources being gutted, gun issues being normalized, covid interrupting their most formative years. they deserve love and care not to be made fun of for their trauma response

As the eldest millennial I approve this message. Gen Z are forged in fire we are lucky all the do is stare at us when we are slow, incompetent, and centering ourselves in public. ❤️

I will defend the youngers at all cost. We have been destroyed by the older generations. I will never ever pass that along to the babes. We’re handing the world to them so broken. How dare we.

As a 96er I feel no strong allegiance to either generation but it’s interesting to me that depending on who you listen to, you’ll hear a completely different version of what they believe the gen z stare is, and everyone seems to have a unique perception of whether millennials are just making an observation or being harsh towards younger people.

We've been poisoned by toxic parents (in my case, being forced to live with one, a narcissist, for well over a decade and a half). Can't we Gen-Y cut Gen-Z some slack?

my son is gen z (24) and I'm gen x (50) and we are learning to navigate communication with each other, I try not to compare our childhoods, simply because we definitely did not have the same experiences! the stare honestly doesn't bother me, I think we need to stop making fun of people in general! social media is a great tool, but it has also created a world that people hide behind, and have no consequences to their actions or words. and truly I would love to see generations learn from each other, not try to one up!

lol yeah as an older gen z (2000 baby) I definitely think gen z is taking a little too seriously considering it’s mostly an observation about our behavior but I also think the millennials are taking it too seriously everyone just be nice to each other omg

thank youuuu everyone also lacking the nuance that our generation was given technology without anyone knowing how that would impact development and now they're laughing at our apparently lack of social skills when we should be more worried about the root causes of that issue

I’m a GenX with a GenZ and a Gen Alpha kid. I want better for them and their friends and their generation than what I had. I don’t understand why we wouldn’t?

i really wanna write a paper about how the “problems” people point out in gen z is just a reflection of us internalizing external/world problems (Covid, etc)

I think part of this is we’re trying to understand how they voted the way they did in the last election (46% for Trump) and we’re having a lot of emotions around it. Like…we’re seeing them like they’re the boomers so we don’t feel like we’re punching down. So, maybe if we open up a real dialogue with them to try to understand what happened in the election we could have a more productive conversation around it? And also process our feelings about it on our own…we had really high expectations of them (“gen z will save the world!”) and our disappointment that that didn’t happen is ours to deal with not to push on them

Here's the thing. I have never understood being so hyperaware of the personal quirks of other people that I've actually put that much thought into it, at ALL. When I meet a person under any circumstance, the most I think is "that is that person and that is who they are". Period. I'm not judging or reading into every interaction, it has never once crossed my mind to compare literally anything about my life to their's bc why would I know a single thing about their life, or how their day is going or their personality and why would it ever matter in ANY capacity unless we are intertwined in someway and they need my help. Bc if they need my help then I'd need to know HOW to help them but besides that literally it doesn't matter. The whole thing is weird to me
