@nerdypriest: If we resent others for not doing as much as we are doing, are we being led by love or our own sense of self-importance #progressiveclergy #progressivechristian #episcopal #anglican #gilmoregirls #60secondsermon
"A life of spiritual contemplation is great, but at the end of the day somebody's gotta do the dishes" Love this! Even monastics still have to do their chores.

I always hated that story because I was like she needs help and no one is helping her because of gender roles, but Jesus didn’t say help her. He said you should be at my feet listening. He’s not wrong, but he’s also not right. Because if it wasn’t done, Mary would be in trouble.

I think Emily gets a bad rap. Lorelai is tone deaf and insufferable. Emily kept everything going. She’s an old school matriarch.

Thank you for this detail. I also struggle with this story. Martha would have been criticized if she hadn’t been a good and welcoming hostess. Is Jesus telling her to simply not worry about what society thinks about that role? Idk. <—Catholic but no theologian.

In my mind, I associate this story with Matthew 26:11 as well. There are day-to-day necessities but there are also unique, important, moments and you can't let one dominate the other.

I bet he ate the meal Martha cooked and enjoyed the house being ready for him and his pals to visit.

Friend from my MDiv program preached an amazing sermon on Mary and Martha in our homiletics class that turns the traditional interpretation on its head. I can’t remember all the details but I do remember that it was a message about the “yes, and” of spirituality: that we need both contemplation (Mary) and praxis (Martha). I still have her source list: Yamahguchi, Mary & Martha; Hanson, The New Perspective on Mary & Martha; Mitchell, Beyond Fear and Silence; And of course Kwok Pui-Lan

I think my favorite interpretation of the story doesn’t exalt either woman above the other but sees that Martha needs to be seen and supported but also recognizes that her frustration is hers in her own calling and she is projecting onto Mary “shoulds” in a way that isn’t lessening her burden and is only feeding resentment. Mary gets to have her own path but that doesn’t lessen Martha’s value and call. Both are called deacons in that story.

Being caught up in the production to have the “perfect setting” for capital-letters Spiritual Moments is often more harmful than helpful to people’s drive to keep their faith strong. Sometimes you just have to get cozy and clean later, which is a tough reminder

I love the way you framed this message! I sometimes think Martha gets a bad rap, but agree on the caution to not be self-important in our service. I love how, in John 11, Martha later recognizes Jesus as Messiah; she learned to focus on what is truly important.

I also understood Martha’s concern. When you have guests you want them to feel comfortable, and perhaps have food and drink.

I read U.A.Fanthorpe’s poem “Unauthorised Version” as my sermon today. Tells the story from Mary’s point of view of solidarity with Martha as her sister.
