Definitely something Lolth made happen. Not precisely a sane goddess is she.

The fetus absorbing the other weaker one isn't just Drow. It's also us humans. The child born is often called a chimera.

intrauterine cannibalism (fetus cannibalization) is actually a thing that happens in some sharks like tiger sharks

This actually plays into the curse placed on the Drow. yes it is unpleasant to think of in some ways, but makes perfect sense from a full reflection of the lore.
The Drow were cursed to shy from the light of the world, all their pleasures would sour and the pain and suffering would be their reward for their betrayal.
Now stack on generations upon generations of this, where pain if face registers as pleasure, where through the evolution of their species this has been deemed necessary for survival on top of their deity literally being turned from a god to a demon, granted domain over betrayal and suffering.
This particular part of the lore is to demonstrate the full devotion millennial long dedication to a demon can bring.
All of that is not to say I agree with it, but when it was written, it was meant to show the contrast between the surface elves and the cursed underdark elves.
Hope that helped 😉

d&d apologizes not for being racist but for being perceived as racist making their previous lore appear to be racist now that they claim that it is even though it had nothing to do with race whatsoever...

also forgotten realms creator ed greenwood is a complete freak. this is a direct quote "Drow breastmilk, thanks to those who produce it having centuries of exposure to cave fungi and molds and the faezress, tastes a little more mushroomy than minty elven breastmilk. To any humans who sample it, the result is a little more chalky, and ever so slightly tart/hot (the same way those tiny cinammon heart Valentine's Day hard candies have heat), but to elves who sample drow breast milk, it tastes sweeter than it seems to humans (and far less minty than their own breast milk). Interestingly, to dwarves, both elven and drow breast milk taste a lot like (original, unsweetened) licorice."
