My theory(building on comics and other comments) is that Haru was violated in an incredibly violent manner. He tries to cope through media, which is why it is very disturbing. After all, some art disturbs the comfort and comforts the disturbed. He doesn’t relate to the doing but the suffering. As in, he relates to the girl in the aforementioned movie. She’s tortured, like him. Why does he do it? Regain control. Abuse victims may replay their trauma over and over to see what they could do differently and glean the best from their hurt. He can pause. He can say what else he would have done. He can better recall what his mind suppress so his hurt at least seems to have purpose. It is controlled, it is safe. Even if it’s a bad ending, he can feel better because his life isn’t nearly as bad or is the same.(I do hope it isn’t the latter or worse) Plus, he doesn’t have the same comfort it just ends right there. But he might unintentionally trap himself there like a traumatised hypersexual yearning for the same sort of simulation. It’s his pained scream. He says things like identity, memory loss…Yea. It is clear as day…Poor Haru.

no I understand both sides. I also enjoy SA scenes and very psychological torturous scenes/shows. but I'd never do it myself. I've actually experienced SA as a kid—but I'm a people-watcher. I'm obsessed with watching people's reactions to things, and stuff as deep as sxual trauma is so fascinating. It says a lot about the attacker AND the victim, just watching it. but on the other hand, I understand how enjoying something like that can be taken horribly. not many people enjoy it for the same reason I do and I understand that—it's usually sadistic. I too would be concerned if I heard it without explanation, it's human instinct.

heyyy im not sure if this question is insensitive since it’s comparing fake films to real ones, I’ll delete this if anyone asks- but exactly what sort of films does Haru collect? i understand the torture & violation aspects that are likely in all of them, and he does specify it’s not just women, but how bad are the films themselves?? I’m assuming none of them are actual snvff, but would his collection be comparable to someone collecting Lucifer Valentine’s works?? or is it more tame than that?? maybe worse?? once again, so sorry if this comes off as insensitive, im just trying to understand exactly what Haru’s collection is

OHHH THIS IS AMAZINGG (I didn’t expect him to react like that, but at the same time it makes so much sense and I loved the chapter but it’s also making me suffer). okay so, based on this… I’m now pretty convinced that the event I always talked about is probably SA. Or at least some kind of major violation. something REALLY big. and this is his way of coping with it. Or maybe it wasn’t him directly but someone really close to him? Like his mother? And for some reason he had to witness it. either that or it WAS him. But either way, he blames himself for it happening even though i’m pretty sure it wasn’t his fault. that’s just such a common thing for people who’ve been assaulted or traumatized to feel. and like I mentioned in my last comment, maybe watching that kind of stuff gives him some weird sense of control over it. or comfort, in a twisted way. Or well, any of the reasons i listed before or maybe a mix of them. also, since that particular movie is EXACTLY like what happened to his student, maybe sometimes he even gets urges? like intrusive thoughts to hurt or do something bad. so by watching these kinds of movies, it’s his way of coping or keeping those urges contained. i’m not saying he actually wants to do anything but it could be part of the reason he’s so drawn to it. like studying the monster to keep it in a cage. i don’t know though, that part is still not clear to me. now what REALLY surprised me was his reaction. i have 4 theories about why he reacted the way he did: 1. maybe a part of him actually WANTED Victoria to find out about this side of him. maybe because he really likes her and since she already snooped he thought “welp. now you know.” He DID leave the dvds kind of in plain sight, right? like, not super hidden. So maybe a small part of him wanted her to discover it. maybe he was testing her. does she accept him as he is? will she reject him? can she handle the parts of him he hates? 2. he might be completely freaking out internally but trying to “act normal.” like, if he stays calm maybe she won’t freak out either. maybe that’s why he casually explained where he got the DVD, talking about it like it’s just another collector’s item. ++

I think this is a way of hard coping. Gore, torture in a metaphorical sense like how people use intimacy to create meaning and symbolism. The symbolism side in gore has always been over looked and over shadowed by the blood splattered, like how she is currently blinded by the torture and gore in the vhs while haru is trying to explain. On Vic’s side it must have been so traumatic for her, she gave her body to many men as a way of showing love because she didn’t know how to properly deal and show love, so seeing how haru “likes” to watch a pregnant(a girl who gave her body) teenager get assaulted and tortured left like it meant he is gonna do the same(mentally) like every other boy she dated. So in a sense they are not even healthy for each other, it’s a cute love story but if they both don’t heal properly from the trauma and life(feelings in general) both will crush each other with their own expectations and experience. That’s all my thoughts through out I hope this eries continues!!! Love ittt

I feel like this would be a great portrayal of two COMPLETELY opposite coping mechanisms, where haru would be the ones finding comfort in things that remind you of bad experiences/trauma and Victoria would be running away from the memories and ignoring the fact they'll scar you whether you ignore them or not. Honestly i resonate with haru a lot in this episode, especially in the way he fails to see why Victoria finds this messed up. I love how they both fail to understand each other's motifs, even if both seem logical from outside. And the fact is, it's so well written that anyone, in the same situation of one of the two, wouldn't be able to get the whole picture of it and misunderstand. It's perfect, truly.

can everyone put the facts we know together. a movie that 1. stopped being distributed years ago 2. stopped being streamed online and 3. he had to get from a SELLER OVERSEAS?? it's fucking weird even if I really like Haru and see myself in him. I struggle with this because I read dark fiction, but I think that those factors mentioned plus Haru being a man makes it weirder. I think vic is in her right to feel weirded out, I think any woman would have her alarms up because of something like this

Depending on the story haru could be right or Victoria could be right. If the story IS ACTUALLY GOOD and that’s why Haru watches it, then he’s right, if it’s actually more like human centipede garbage, then yeah he’s wrong. I do kinda agree with the idea of collecting banned media. That just seems like a fun hobby regardless of if you actually enjoy the media itself.

im like curious question to the creator weren't you showing us two sides of the same coin of trauma here? like some people get scared from brutality because they almost or did experienced it and the side where you watch brutality for control and trying to comfort yourself? i don't know how should i say it but if my silly theory is right its genius play on show dont tell
