Debates as entertainment has been around since at least Ancient Greece. The problem is when the debate and the debaters are acting in bad faith. The larger issue is politics poisons every well it touches. At this point in time if you are politician or political agent talking about anything political you are acting in bad faith.

These debate shows were far better in the 90s and 2000s. When it was actual intellectuals discussing in front of an audience of students, academics and those interested in the subject. When you have 1 “expert” vs 20 amateurs it turns into a challenge not a conversation

yeah and they are never in good faith. so already the debates are just entertainment. I blocked Jubilee and stopped watching them. I'm less interested in dunking in people and more interested in what cane be done to find common ground

I see a lot of these takes that will outright claim there is ZERO utility in these kinds of sensationalized debates or rarely a less hyperbolic claim that the harm outweighs any benefit. Is there any data that can be used to evaluate that claim? As someone who has literally had their mind changed from watching these same kinds of debates (as flawed as they are) seeing people claim that they "change nobody's mind" looks more like a general disdain for public discourse.

I'm at the point where I think debate is pointless. I have gotten into countless debates where I presented perfect well reasoned arguments and never changed a single mind. people are just too inherently stubborn, if someone is gonna change their mind they are going to do it on their own accord.

been saying this for 20 years now. debates are no longer a valid form of discussion. debates as I was taught in school was a skill. I remember being told if you can't disprove your own argument with your opponents then you don't know yours well enough.
