Yep. I had agonizing sciatica for 2 years. MRI showed a slight impingement on my left side. No one would do surgery. Finally got to the point where I was like “I want self delete from the pain”. Doctor told me after surgery that my left sciatic nerve was *very irritated*. Foraminotomy gave me my life back, but I was left to suffer for 2 years because the MRI looked mild.

MRI’s have huge amounts of radiation!

Me watching this as I wait to see if my insurance will approve the MRIs I requested vs the CT scans they prefer me to get. I already have been dismissed for years now

My CARDIAC MRI missed the hole in my heart. I was in that machine for 2 or 3 hours!

So then what are the necessary tests for this conplex and persistent pain?

If having pain for a few years now has taught me anything it’s that a mental component cannot be used to dismiss pain. Yes I hurt less when I’m able to do something that helps me ignore it. That doesn’t mean I’m not in pain!

These are super good points but also I don’t think that you can say that MRIs have done more harm than good. I think that the good of having a diagnostic tool like an MRI far outweighs the harm. That being said, we do need to have doctors look at it as ONE tool of many. Not the only.

You’re describing *diagnosis.* Imaging is information which can inform diagnosis, but every imaging modality has functional limitations. In your analogy the MRI is the picture, but the home inspector is the diagnostic physician.

I’m so thankful my mri proved why I have been having horrible nerve pain. Will be getting back surgery soon for an extruded disc

this is the problem with Trigeminal Neuralgia. more often than not, no compression shows on any type of MRI, but when surgery is done, major compressions are there.

another problem with MRIs is the images are taken when the body is relaxed and laying down. which for chronic pain pts usually is when our pain is the least and most manageable. its when we are up, moving and having to support our own body when things get wonky and an MRI won't catch that.

They found my par fracture on a CT scan. MRI didn’t show it. Only showed the herniations I had in my back.

i agree with this. for someone who has ehlers danlos and has searched for what was wrong with me my entire life, nothing was ever wrong on MRIS bc it’s my connective tissue! and a lot of my pain is nerve related!

I have had more injuries caused by mri machines and poorly trained staff or just staff that did not care. I was never claustrophobic before. After so many bad experiences I am now.

💯💯💯Agree, I was diagnosed with seronegative myasthenia gravis, Raynaud syndrome, cold agglutinin disease, dermatomyositis and rheumatoid arthritis. I’m constantly in pain, I keep telling my team of doctors that I feel I have something else going on. Unfortunately, I’ve had so many MRI, ct scans, nerve conduction studies, etc. my symptoms are not part of my diagnosis of my many chronic illnesses. I always feel dismissed and told that one of my already diagnosed illnesses is causing other symptoms and pain.

I don’t think we necessarily need to blame the MRIs. I think they do miss things, but I also believe that there are a lot of doctors that don’t listen to their patients.

I really think doctors need to go back to listening to the patients and using lab/imaging as tool not the end-all be-all of diagnosis. They can help rule some things out but shouldn’t be the end of treatment/diagnosis. I agree with you!

This is absolutely true. My daughter has a Rare Disease and MRI is used a lot of times to analyze that disease. It misses so much. The German research group found it is not sensitive enough.

And due to MRIs and CTs WITH contrast, starting at age 10, I’ve been exposed to 40 times more radiation than anyone should be.

Was told that I don't have trigeminal neuralgia based just on an MRI, got a second opinion. Doc #2 said, for starters, it was the wrong MRI and that, beyond a doubt, I do have TN.
