I refuse to use chatGPT. The inevitable success of AI is a fallacy. It is marketed as something it isn’t. Let them invest and let them fail.

AGREE! The fact that Google is using AI for EVERY search by default… they are using more in 1 day than I will probably individually use in my lifetime.

Hi. Climate and enviro lobbyist who regularly interfaces with climate, tech, and govt decisionmakers. Without the public actively speaking out against AI and its harmful impacts to Black and Brown communities there is NO DEFENSE to its build out. I understand that we are apathetic given the state of things but AI is not inevitable! It is in its infancy and therefore even more necessary NOW to be vocally against it. Tech companies wasting their money on something that can still fail (see: cryptocurrency) is their problem. It does not need to be ours. They *WANT* AI to feel so innate to our lived experience we don’t push back. It’s bad and your usage of it absolutely has an impact. I promise! The power is absolutely yours.

This is definitely the take. I feel like it’s the paper straw/ personal recycling issues…. Like even if I personally recycle perfectly it’s not going to off set giant companies and billionaires with private jets.

I agree with you that people need to be learning how to use these tools. I also think people need to learn more about technology in general. You can’t beat what you don’t understand and unfortunately, the way people are talking about this reveals just how little people understand about this technology. AI is just one facet of technology. Everything that people are condemning is not AI. These data centers are not just “processing AI.” They’re storing data for everything. Your email, social media, health records, government records, etc. - you can’t disentangle yourself from it unless you go off grid and completely analog. And if you’re not doing that, you’re in no position to be moralizing against people that are using it. Also, while it’s true that technology is very resource intensive, it’s not THE MOST resource intensive. For example if you eat meat, your environmental impact is thousands times greater than what a ChatGPT search uses. The solutions are going to require systemic change, and that has to start at the top. The government needs to be mitigating and regulating. They need to be implementing and enforcing policies and laws that protect us from harm. These companies need to be centering ethics in their products and services. We can’t “personal responsibility” our way out of this. It didn’t work with recycling. It ain’t gonna work with this. Okay, I’ll get off my soapbox now.

it's like the recycling/environmental protections issue. they'll make it seem like it's our responsibility when it's really the huge corporations are the biggest part of the problem. and yet, I still try to be environmentally & AI responsible

I’m worried about how smart AI will become. To the point where it can’t be controlled by its creators anymore. There are no guardrails whatsoever.

Lo :
Disagree. We all need to do our part the same way we need to life our personal lives more sustainably. Just bc the corporations aren’t doing it, doesn’t mean we just forget about doing anything ourselves. We also have to pressure our local government to not allow things like the Memphis xAI campus pollution.

As an attorney and AI policy and ethics specialist, this a reasonable and balanced take - healthy skepticism w respect to widespread and personal behaviors, yes, but realism when it comes to what truly drives impacts. And fwiw, ChatGPT is not the beginning of AI, it’s everywhere and in so many tools / products we already use. Opting out of AI is nearly impossible, so understanding it more fully is responsible use of AI in the long run (even to make credible arguments against).

Fantastic ethics debate- this technology is not being invested in for the good of humanity - the role of the government sometimes is the only thing to shield the people from corporations (holders of capital) because they will never do things for the good of humanity

I fear that if we refuse to embrace or at least acknowledge it, it will only harm you - because someone else who dove in is going to get the job or opportunity you’re going for.

Why, Karen :
I’m not sure why we only look at the environmental impact of AI. Streaming HD videos is MUCH more water and energy consumptive. Eating meat, zoom, Google, email…. All of these have an environmental impact commiserate or greater than a ChatGPT query. Why are we only attaching morality to the use of AI?

I view it as: anything we can do to help the climate, we should. Also I have deep concerns over the information every day users are feeding into it, even as simple as just emails. I don’t think there is a good case or ethical case use for AI at all. 🤷♀️
