This really does need to be discussed more. Because it’s very often being said “we need our own!” but this is literally what having our own looks like: working through kinks while many small Black owned founders figure it out without the help non Black founders are usually given for MUCH less 🫠 I made a video about this a few weeks ago!

This is so true. Rhode Beauty is a primer example of this. They had all kinds of consumer complaints. Yet, they sold for a $1B while only being business for 3 years. Yet, Ami Cole has been business for 4 and has to close its doors.

Using my experience as a researcher, I think the way we communicate/market with our audience needs to be slightly modified. In my opinion, we might need to niche down and tailor our marketing and branding strategies to reach the expected target audience. We work within a built community

I really think for black owned brands we need a different strategy - not scaling too fast if we don’t have the funds, slow to release new products. Pushing marketing to help support the brand awareness, and its current product offering. A slower growth strategy than rushing to get into these retailers.

It’s not even the small ones too! When Beyoncé announced her hair brand, so many people had already written it off. It had to perform literal miracles to gain some respect!

It makes me wonder how brands like Youthforia are still up and running

Honestly, I didn’t even need to finish the video to like it. I have my own lip gloss line, and the comments I receive are wild! People ask why it’s so expensive, if there are any discounts, and why I don't offer more shades. Yet, those same folks are quick to defend the Dior lip oil when their scandal came out. 🤦🏾♀️

Reminds me of Range Beauty. They had so much potential! Complexion for sensitive / eczema prone skin and their foundation was good!

Mind you, there are companies that have been in the space for DECADES still making shade range snafus and weird packaging choices and they get ALL THE GRACE.

You are 💯💯! I work in the product development and R&d space in beauty and I’ve seen so much slide for certain brands but bring in a black owned brand, they’re not given the same grace. Even when writing pitches for Ulta and Sephora, I learned that certain brands can go off vibes but black owned brands have to be 100% factual, science backed, no gimmicks and are still scrutinized.

Black owned businesses in all industries face these challenges. It’s so frustrating.

They don't go past medium tan. If I'm the darkest shade, it's a big problem.

This is so true! It also applies in corporate as well. Other ethnicities are given space to grow and we have to be perfect from day one too and prove our worth.

Exactly like the rhode lip glaze was not even done well that people needed to boil it in their home. She had the opportunity to re evaluate the glaze but black owned businesses don’t have that grace. No hate to Hailey Bieber though.

I use the Ami Cole mascara (RIP) and in my Sephora the brand has one messy unorganized shelf on an end cap. I don’t know whose responsibility it is to keep it up, the store or the brand, but I noticed that after the initial few months it was basically ignored. But, Danessa Myricks graduated from half an end cap to their own dedicated end cap and everything is always stocked and organized. And I feel like I heard a lot more about Ami Cole than DM but that could just be my media diet, which is a lot of women who love lip oils LOL.
