This is almost always a symptom of a mental health dysfunction. It’s not a “US problem”. This is a human problem. It’s very shortsighted to think “this doesn’t happen in my country”.

It happens. My daughter was depressed it was debilitating her. When I took her to my stylist, she pulled me to the side (I guess she could tell I was upset and embarrassed) and she said “This is something I see. It happens. Don’t let it get this bad. Bring her to me anytime.” it helped us so much

One of my friend’s hair got matted. I tried to get it out but I just wasn’t able to. She end up shaving her hair off and letting it grow back.

I used to work at a DV shelter. Our biggest donations came from wealthy individuals/business owners in the community who wanted to give back. We would do private tours and have former clients tell the stories of their lives and how our services helped them. That brought the most money because it was real 💖
