Yep. The patterns were an allegory. The golden honmoon literally got replaced with a rainbow honmoon

While Rumi as a character may or may not *literally* be queer, her story is an allegory for queerness and the queer experience and honestly I love that. Not many parents would allow their child to watch an explicitly and unapologetic LGBTQ+ movie, so sewing in an overall theme that could be applied to multiple expriences and pulling from queer culture in a way that isn't so obvious to homophobic parents who may have LGBTQ children is so neat! Allows those of us trapped in closets not of our own making to finally feel a connection with a movie that speaks to our struggle!

the way people would rather Rumi be shipped with an evil manipulative demon than a woman is so telling ☠️

I'd also argue it can be autism coding as well. The shame and not feeling loved or fully accepted by loved ones is very real. Also her saying "okay bye" so suddenly made me laugh because as an autistic person I've done that so many times

And the fact that her auntie only “accepted” her because that’s her sisters daughter…but when Rumi wanted her to see her for her? She couldn’t even look her way

Also super relatable to autistic people, needing to close yourself off and never being understood

the whole time I was watching the first time I literally was like "oh this is so trans coded" lol like its definitely a comparison that makes a lot of sense!!! any queer person for the most part watching will probably relate to rumi in a way

She was literally told to hide part of herself until it could be fixed, that her friends wouldn't understand, and it meant she was 'bad'. Definitely relatable to the LGBTQIA community.

people that push SO HARD against seeing queer themes in media are just mad that they think they relate less to it now. Like queer people haven’t had to take in media that doesn’t relate to their experience for….ever

the "all of me" line really hit hard for me because Im in a point of my life when Im really just struggling to accept myself as a part of the community, not because I think is bad. But because for me is really hard to just come out of the closet with my family members so seeing Rumi in that scene made me so emocional 😭

Friendly reminder that the creator's husband, who also worked on KPDH, created Kipo! It's not at ALL a stretch for there to be queer rep in the movie

Bain of JustB is a kpop idol who recently came out as gay and he talked about how watching kpdh made him emotional and how much he could relate to Rumi bc he also felt like he was hiding something as an idol so this confirmation is nice to know 🫶

even if it wasn't the main intent, KPDH could very easily be queer allegory. not just the personal journey of self-acceptance but also the community's current experience with outside influences trying to divide us because we're more vulnerable alone rather than together

I have never had a movie break through my walls like this one. Never had something make me feel as seen as this movie. "Why couldn't you love me? ALL OF ME?!" That's a sentence more queer ppl have said in their life than any other.
