“Plague-“ PLAGUE? as in THE BUBONIC PLAGUE? Did you know that the nursery rhyme, “Ring Around The Rosies” was actually made to warn and teach children about the bubonic plague? [happy] Many nursery rhymes were made to teach life lessons and memorable history to children like for instance, “London Bridge is Falling Down” which people argue whether it’s about the Viking invasion in which they pulled the bridge down or when the London bridge fell after the Great Fire of London. “Ring Around The Rosies” is actually a warning about the bubonic plague (which is still around to this day but is treatable and is very rare)!! “Ring around the rosies, pocket full of posies,” actually stands for where the people believed that flowers with heavy scents would ward off the plague as they thought it was spread through smells and the air (the actual way it was spread was from fleas on rats). “ashes, ashes we all fall down,” infers to the method of cremation carried out to prevent the spread of the plague from the dead bodies. More commonly, the bodies would be left in the streets due to an increase in deaths and not enough graves. This caused more people to get sick and more dead bodies due to the ultimate loop of the plague. [shock] Over time, the plague subsided from people finally taking better care of themselves and the dead bodies. 30% to 60% of Europe’s population died due to the plague and the plague lasted from 1346 to 1353. There were 3 big outbreaks of the plague, the first one in Europe (1346-1353) with an estimated 200 million deaths, second outbreak in London (1665-1666) estimated 100,000 deaths, and the third major outbreak in China which spread to parts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas (1894-1912) with an estimated 12 to 15 million deaths. As I said before, the bubonic plague IS still around to this day but the disease is now treatable and very rare so you don’t have to worry about it!! The bubonic plague has many names, the most common being the Black Death. [proud] (I love educating people about the bubonic plague)
