I’m confused. Many authors object to fanfic as hurting their brand and can sue fanfic authors. Now we have to avoid books that stem from fanfic because the copyright holders benefit? I understand not wanting to financially support an author, but this seems tenuous at best. Am I supposed to boycott every story with magic schools because it could be a gateway book to Harry Potter?

I wrote a dissertation on this! All these dramione fanfics being published are using that hag to market their books and the works are just…not transformative enough to hide the original IP since it is so specific compared to something like the love hypothesis or even 50 shades. Also what is the fixation on selling Hermione into slavery in all these books?

I read the book and it is in no way related to harry potter whatsoever, everything is reworked from the world, plot, to magic system. It is more related to your typical romantasy or anything. And she has denounced JK. The backlash is weird

The most successful movements are targeted with clear desired outcomes. And idk I don’t think positioning fanfic as the way we chip away at JKR’s reach is a winning strategy. To me, we need to have a targetted movement to certainly boycott the new HBO show but honestly maybe even HBO all together. Dividing the anti-jkr base when data doesn’t clearly show that fanfic keeps JKR relevant is misguided in my view. I’m not saying the claims are totally false but I think it’s way more complex than a lot of people are making it out to me.

Genuine question, is there an argument that HP universe fanfic could serve as an outlet for people who like the IP but can’t/won’t engage with it directly since the fanfic wouldn’t monetarily benefit jkr? I know you discussed it still be intellectual and emotional support, but wondering anyone’s thoughts on it as a non-financial imperfect alternative

It being fanfic is not the problem. So many stories are derivative of other works, and using loose definitions, that makes it fanfic; it could be argued that it’s the entire reason we have genre-based literature. Many beloved fiction stories are just transformative enough that you no longer associate it with the original work. The issue is that it’s HP fanfic, and that it is associated with JKR, and I think many people reduce the discussion to it being fanfic alone, which ignores the actual problem that you have very clearly laid out - it’s the continued violence of JKR, and the need to divest from her and all of her works.

But also…. Fanfic is a way for us to rewrite a book we felt didn’t give us what we needed. Look at drarry fanfic. Draco and Harry together. Fanfic reading doesn’t lead me to purchase or support jk Rowling. fanfic in a way insults the original author. It’s a slap in their face.

As a bit of aside, I am getting frustrated that everyone has Julie Soto’s name on blast when it was a Big 5 house-Harper Collins-that bought, published, and is marketing the book. I feel like the backlash against JS would be better directed in so many ways at the larger, more powerful org that is financially backing this book.

I don’t disagree with any of the points and am divesting myself from anything supporting JKR but I’m so confused about the timing, is it because the book was just released? All of these facts have been common knowledge for a while - the source material of the book, the marketing the publisher was using, JS attendance at RomanceCon, the management company’s history. Why are we outraged now and not when she was announced to attend in the first place?

think it’s interesting bc fanfic is usually hated by the authors who’s media is being used and is also illegal. so for work stollen from problematic authors being described as glorifying their work feels somewhat paradoxical.

How is fanfic supporting her when almost every authors note says ‘I don’t support jkr’ and everyone talks about not supporting her

I’ve also seen people point out that Rowling has come after her IP legally in the past, so to think that these publishers are not paying her to market these books with it is simply naive.

tbh, the new premise sounds like half a dozen ku books I’ve read. At what point is it far enough away from the original? Serious question, not trying to fight!

Great video! Also, romance con’s intial statement defended HP fanfic because they said it’s ok to enjoy and reclaim it privately, but the issue is they were hosting whole panels on HP fanfic which is not private enjoyment! I cared deeply about HP, but I care about trans people so much more???

It’s also important to note that Julie Soto and the other author Brigitte Knightly never promoted their books themselves as dramione or HP related. You can go back over a year on their pages and in their interviews. Also Soto denounce JK and said she wouldn’t write under the IP anymore. This book is entirely different and this energy needs to go towards something else

I have never understood the Harry Potter loyalty as a millennial. I read the books, I watched the movies, and that was that. People have to let it go. She’s just so awful.
