I work at an independent shop that is also a private inspection facility. If your mechanic does any repair that involves clearing codes/warning lights, the vehicle needs to be driven to reset the readiness monitors to pass inspection. 100 miles of local road and highway driving will usually do the trick

My Truck failed for identical reason - most likely they had vehicle connected to the ODB port when she had valve done (this would give you the fail ) I drove for a week & took it back & went right through

the car has to go through a few hot to cold cycles. She will be fine, just has to reset.

The MVS guy is talking about monitors... which are various tests for different systems. Some are tested almost instantly... others like EGR or EVAP can take a while to test. Newer cars need to have results for all monitors.
I recommend getting a ELM327 compatible Bluetooth OBD2 plug... these are cheap, as low as $10... but you get what you pay for. Your Android phone can connect to the plug via Bluetooth and download the free version of Torque which talks to your car's computer. This gives you the ability to read codes, erase codes, and check on monitors. Worth every penny.

he is correct there is no indicator for it. What you actually failed for is the computer was not ready. after they changed what ever valve you're talking about most likely and evap valve you did not drive the car far enough for the computer to do its tests. that is one of the longest tests to run. in the computer 10 mi will not cut it. I am from New Jersey I am in the shore area. I tell people to drive up to the Raritan bridge and back and then by then you should be ready. to go you are correct and the fact that there is no indicator for it. The person that fixed your car should have told you this

My son’s car failed for the same thing. No lights were on or anything. Failed because their computer couldn’t take to the car’s computer. My son took it back a few days later and passed.

They only check emissions. They do not check lights, brakes or anything anymore. It’s ridiculous, but that’s what happened. The battery was disconnected or died and it just hasn’t been driven enough exact thing happened to me. I had an old card that was sitting around and I went to sell it so I put a new battery intook it for inspection and that’s what the guy told me. I waited a couple days and then it went through.

2015, drive through every time. They don’t do emission anymore it’s quick and easy

it's called emissions readiness, takes about 40 duty cycles, witch means just drive the car for a week and go again, take it on local and parkway it will be fine.

Not a fail but when I took my minivan to the Lakewood inspection station the guy told me he’s not used to seeing such clean well maintained minivans 😂😂

The codes take a cycle to clear. so even if you fix the problem the old code will still be in the comp. till you drive a cycle

The dealership must have erased the check engine light prier to her leaving with it. That triggers the DMV computer not to read. How did you know she needed the valve replaced ?

Had the same issue recently on my car. Had to drive more like 100 miles, but it passed easily right after I did that. Good luck

Yes, I have had that happen. Just dropped the car around a little bit. Go back. No big deal.

They only require emissions testing now. There are no longer checking for safety issues.

And if you still get rejected, you can always take it back to the dealership because they can’t sell you a car that cannot be New Jersey inspected to my understanding

Unfortunately it happens all the time. It's not 10 miles. You have to drive a hundred miles, then go back this is on any car 1996 or newer. If they just work on the vehicle before you got it inspected that is why it needs time to reset. Very common

My dad wasn’t able to get it inspected because the windshield tint, that was on the truck when he bought it, doesn’t have a cut out big enough for the sticker, yet it was two years ago. Went to another station and had no issues.

Correct. Take it back to where you got it and tell them it failed. My son had something similar. bad o2 sensor the month before he went and it still failed. he drove it another month and it passed.

Things in Jersey have changed. When I was younger they actually did a safety inspection along with an emissions inspection. Now they just do emissions only.
