A main cause of this is the accessibility of education and general funding. Most major cities are blue, where higher and generally better education is. If major cities were red it would follow the same trend. For instance in Illinois, Chicago school districts are heavily funded while going just 30 minutes outside of Chicago can cause you to reach schools with under a million dollars of funding.
