@courtneykmarshall: 🩺 What It’s Like Living with HLA-B27+ Spondyloarthropathy & Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder HLA-B27+ Spondyloarthropathy This is an autoimmune condition where my immune system mistakenly attacks parts of my own body—especially the joints, spine, and soft tissues like tendons and ligaments. It causes: Chronic pain and stiffness, often in the spine, hips, pelvis, or other joints Inflammation that can affect not just joints, but also eyes, skin, and gut Fatigue that doesn’t go away with rest Flare-ups that can strike unexpectedly, making movement painful and exhausting A long-term risk of joint damage or fusing, especially in the spine It’s not just “a bad back” or “a little arthritis”—it affects multiple systems and takes a toll every day. Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) HSD is a connective tissue disorder. My joints are too flexible because the tissues that should hold them stable are too stretchy or weak. That leads to: Joints that move too far, or even partially dislocate Constant muscle tightness or spasms from my body trying to stabilize itself Frequent injuries, even during regular, everyday movements Chronic pain, but in a different, less predictable way than the inflammatory kind Fatigue from my muscles always having to “pick up the slack” With HSD, my joints don’t always feel safe or reliable, and my body gets worn out just trying to stay upright and balanced. So What Does That Mean for Me? I live with pain, fatigue, and instability most days. Sometimes my body feels too stiff to move, other times too loose to trust. I may have to cancel plans, move slower, or rest a lot—even when I really don’t want to. I often look “fine,” but inside I’m managing a lot more than you can see.
