@zuukuo: one thing to add is that in douyin makeup, harsh countour is easier to draw when the base is lighter #fyp #douyin #asian

The reason why being paler is seen as taboo in other places but not tanning is because you naturally cannot get paler than what you are, tanning however is completely natural and happens to everyone. And being pale is rooted in colourism and classism, being tan just happens. But being overly tan is weird too

I genuinely dont understand why people always get mad when asians want to be pale. Its a beauty standard. IN ASIA. IN ASIAN CULTURE. Why are we acting like the beauty stabdard in america isnt tanning. Why is tanning so normalized but wanting to be pale isnt? Its not a racist thing, its genuinely just how asians want to look. Its. A. Beauty. Standard. Especially. For. Asians. Americans always complain and whine about wanting to get tan but asians arent allowed to? If tanning is a beauty standard in one country, whitening/brightening should also be one. Its not racially intended or ment to offend anyone, its just a preference. Just like how americans want to tan without being called racist. Its not that hard to understand. Back then it did have colorism intentions, but in modern day society, its completely normal and seen as a beauty standard and nothing else.

Colorism is quite damaging, especially when compared to the west's obsession with tans 😅 no one is discriminating against their own family members based on how pale they are. it is not pejorative. This negative perception of darker skinniness isn't unique to East Asians- it's also in South Africa and other parts of Asia like India. It is quite sad to see people bleach their skin and browner skin tones are seen as "too dark" or not as beautiful. I've also seen that Jesus gets whitewashed like presented as a *white* man in Churches across the world and I think that's quite sad.

Mostly colorism because it has an impact on people who are born with darker skin tones. Which are perceived as lesser than lighter skin toned people and receive backlash (verbal passive aggressive comments, less perceived value, negative prejudices). It’s very rampant lmao

both whitening and tanning are wrong for me if it's done by force, ur skin color is the way it is to protect you from the sun, or to help u absorb enough vitamin (if ur from a very cold country). asian and some African women bleaching their skin to have white skin while white women burning their skin and damaging it which is one of the main reason why white people are known to age faster are both damaging. I think it's okay if white skin is used for fashion like goth or some alternative fashion, even some east Asian fashion, but associating it with beauty is wrong. I criticized both sides so I don't have ppl saying "b...b...but tanning…" and also just because something is cultural doesn't mean it should be immune to criticism.

Exactly! I'm American but I hate when people say "Omg why are you whitening your skin it's so wrong" it's literally the same as us Americans tanning our skin. it's the same! I'm American but I prefer having pale skin because it's beautiful and ethereal. (I'm White American.)

As an Asian, I can confirm what he is trying to say. It’s not about which make is best. First of all let people do whatever makeup they want and if they wanna do makeup lighter than their shade let them do it. Cuz in America, I saw people putting foundation darker than them to appear tanned and if there’s nothing wrong with it then what’s wrong with using lighter shade?

honestly idk, obvi diff cultures so diff standards i would imagine? but i think a lot of americans are put off by fact that when these east asian makeup brands try to break into the U.S. market all hell breaks loose bc they have like 3 shades and then ppl say this exact thing 😭 but it’s like no, that wont fly here you can’t send an american creator all 3 of ur shades and expect them to be satisfied when the darkest shade is paper white, yk? and then that creator can’t match it to their neck— it’s literally the same reason diff cultures have diff beauty standards. (i also think that ppl
