Before the Battle of Badr, Muslims endured 13 years of brutal persecution in Mecca. They were tortured, boycotted, exiled just for believing in one God. Sumayyah (RA) was killed in cold blood just for saying “La ilaha illa Allah”. So they fled to Medina, thinking they were finally safe, but the Quraysh followed them, still trying to wipe out Islam. That’s when Allah sent down a verse allowing them to fight — not out of aggression, but in defense of their right to exist and worship freely. “Fight them until there is no more fitnah, and the religion is for Allah only” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:193) It’s not about forcing Islam. It’s saying: Fight until the persecution is no more. Fight until people aren’t being tortured, exiled, or killed for believing in Allah. That’s what fitnah means — oppression, not disbelief. Islam is a peaceful religion, however it’s realistic and practical. You are told to retreat, however if you’re attacked repeatedly, and your opposition is denying your human rights, then you must turn around and fight at full strength to defend your religion, yourself and your family. So no, Islam didn’t spread by the sword. Islam stood up against the sword.
