Virologist here with a tangential unscientific question about cytokines: is there a reason I can feel a difference between "I don't feel well because of a pathogen" and "I don't feel well for another reason"? Idk if it's interleukins or interferon but there's like a weird systemic edge to when I'm fighting an infection that is so distinct from any other sensation.

Ooooh love this topic!!! I think about this a lot in the context of steroid hormones and also dementias. In AD the immune cells can become overactive and overwhelmed and assume a weird phenotype that is disastrous for disease progression. Such a great way to talk about this.
