@retrofanfm: Wang Laboratories was a pioneering computer company that played a significant role in the evolution of business computing during the 1970s and 1980s. Founded by Dr. An Wang, the company became known for its word processing systems and minicomputers that were widely used in offices before the dominance of the personal computer. Wang’s machines were sleek, business-oriented, and especially popular with large corporations and government agencies. Their technology helped streamline office work in an era when computing was still seen as futuristic and complex. In the 1980s, Wang made a bold move to promote its innovations in electronic communication with a commercial centered around the concept of "electronic mail" — what we now know simply as email. The ad highlighted how messages could be sent from one terminal to another, eliminating the need for physical memos and speeding up business communication. At a time when email was a novelty to most people, Wang’s campaign aimed to show how their systems were leading the charge into the digital workplace. The commercial now stands as a fascinating time capsule from a company that helped lay the groundwork for the connected world we live in today. #fyp #fypシ #nostalgia #80s #tech
It must have been annoying with all those laser bolts flying around all the time.

There's an office building in Lowell MA shaped like a W as it was owned by Wang Computers.

In the late 1980s I had a job with an Indiana state agency and they did everything on Wang computers. It’s kind of neat to say now that I got to use one back in the day.

My neighbor, when i was 3 (in 1980), worked from home for..IBM, i think? He had the modem where you put the phone on a little cradle. He retired in 2019, having never worked in an office.

I remember this! Before dial up modems, computers sent information via famous spirits seen in 1980s blockbuster hits like Ghostbusters and Poltergeist.

Current gen has zero idea of the struggle. Mail couriers were a major thing, and with the advent of e-mail it removed the wait.
