@thejordonbrown: Brennan Lee Mulligan does not consider himself a storyteller. And for once, Aabria Iyengar is on my side! #worldsbeyondnumber #dimension20 #brennanleemulligan #aabriaiyengar #offthedome

i think the distinction is that the dm is not... THE storyteller. they are A storyteller—and the players are their storytelling companions. EVERYONE is a storyteller in ttrpg.

The best explanation I've heard was "The players are the writers, the GM is the editor."

I'm crashing out because I also disagree with Brennan. You cannot call TTRPGs collaborative storytelling and then immediately take yourself out of the equation!?!?!?

I think Brennan needs to be DM'd by a bad DM. Because let me tell you, while the DM may not be the one telling the story in the same way as the players, it absolutely takes a good storyteller to facilitate them doing that. Knowing when to let scenes play out, when to interrupt the scene, when to increase the tension, increase the stakes. A good DM is a good storyteller, they're just not at the forefront most of the time.

I am 100% on Brennan's side, if I come to your home with flour, eggs, milk, etc. and you and a bunch of people, prepare it, measure it, mix it and put in in the oven, who is the baker? I might give the occasional input but I did not bake that cake

They’re not storytellers. They’re a catalyst for telling stories. They are directors and prompters.

You think people make choices? No, people think they make choices, they think they're gonna steer right, or steer left, but they didn't build the roads. The big choices already got made for them, a long time ago.

I have to say I think I agree with Brennan… As a GM, I consider myself more like an editor than a storyteller. The players each have the story they’re telling, and my job is to fit them all together. Which is storytelling, in a way, but that’s not the primary ACTION taken. Y’know?

I’ve always described DND as “collaborative storytelling” so like every single person is responsible for telling the story even if the DM is facilitating. Because yeah I do think you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink is so real. It’s hard to play with PCs who don’t want to storytell

The dice tell the story; Brennan is on the record with that position. I think he's had to come to this position after one too many Ally Beardsley nat 20s

Brennan’s take makes a lot of sense to me! I’m reading the book Story Genius right now which defines story as needing to follow the inner growth of a character - where the rest (plot, prose, action) are actually secondary to that core transformation within the character. And a DM doesn’t control the growth of player characters, the players do.

Yeah, Brennan is right. The story emerges from a table of storytellers intertwining with a random outcome generating device. (Same as in (good) improv, essentially.) The GM often *appears* to be the storyteller, but that is just a meta-/ludonarrative device to increase engagement (Again, like an improv host).

for me. the players are the story tellers. I'm providing the world and the frame but they're writing the history. that's why ttrpg I'd considered collective storytelling
