You're correct. In 2000 I was pulled over and yanked out of my car by 6 cops and punched for "resisting" because my car "matched a description". It was an 86 VW fox I had bought that morning, didn't match anything. I had just gotten off work as a photo lab supervisor. I was still in a tie. The tore my car apart while screaming at me with guns drawn. Realized I wasn't who they were looking for, they said "sorry" and left. I was lucky

In '91 I was in the driveway at a buddies house, had just shown him a photo of the girl I was dating and was putting my wallet back in my pocket as a cop drove by. He slammed his brakes, jumped out gun drawn and grabbed me, punched me in the head, slammed me across the hood of his cruiser and told me "don't ever put your hands in your pockets when a cop is around" he told me I was lucky he didn't shoot me. While I rather it never happened, the lesson I learned that day at 14 years old is never trust cops.
