@loveheylola: One of the things that I’m really trying to lean into with my trash works is not using new plastics in the form of glues and adhesives. And it’s hard! However, I think sometimes people get so excited about reusing trash in their art and/or craft pieces, that they lose sight of the overall impact. I keep seeing “throw away” crafts made with garbage materials, but also a ton of glue and tape. One time (very early in my trash career), I was a guest artist at an environmental art themed event and folks created an octopus out of garbage, but they used brand new saran wrap to wrap all of its garbage tentacles. And I’m fairly certain that octopus is in a landfill somewhere. It hurt my heart a little bit. If what’s being created isn’t designed to be kept forever (or at least a very long time) there’s a bunch of virgin plastic used to hold it all together, I don’t think we’re accomplishing what we actually want to accomplish. And I think about that all of the time now, because that used to be me. Just gluing garbage to garbage and missing the big picture. And I’m especially thinking about it now, with my Trashion Show project for @TriveniInstitute. Hand sewing this garbage dress is far more time consuming than gluing everything together, but the sewing also tells a story that I think is really important. Every step matters, and we learn as we go. And as we learn, we can make better choices. #trashion #creativereuse

I totally agree with that sentiment of losing sight for the sake of making recycled art. I also create using up cycled materials and struggle to not use glues. Your work is Beautiful!

I love you and I love your work. Can I ask you the question, since you work so much with plastics, are you concerned with micro plastics exposure? For yourself. I didn’t think about it until I saw you with this dress and I was thinking about how plastic bags degrade slowly and they flake off and stuff. No judgment, I’m just genuinely curious.
