@alexx_robinson: It’s been two years since the city revoked thousands of STR permits. Local homeowners have higher mortgages yet we’re unable to utilize room rentals to make up for the rising cost of living. People thought getting rid of STR permits was going to help make housing more affordable- but did it? Or did I lose my the right to rent a room in my home for no reason?
Actually a big issue is people coming in from LA and… NYC. And driving up the cost. People from here were thrilled to see less STR permits, and yes it has helped to some degree with affordability

Honestly yeah. I bought a house that was formerly an STR. I rent out one side to another couple who are both teachers.

I’m in the market and there’s more inventory in the city and sellers are discounting properties in many areas. Not sure if it’s because of the economy, decline in tourism, short-term rental mandate or all three.

If doesn't happen that fast. Short tem rentals hurt the market

Honestly, I'm with the city on this one. I know it sucks that local homeowners like yourself ended up getting squeezed on it too, but the city did try with the absentee property owner rule and the courts struck it down.

Yes, housing prices have declined a New Orleans, especially when you compare New Orleans to other major cities around the country who haven’t got rid of short term rental licenses

No, rent and mortgages haven’t gone down but that’s a bigger problem than STR. I’m very glad that my neighborhood no longer has random people coming to stay week to week. I’d live in the CBD or quarter if that’s what I wanted. I come from a family run and owned Bed & Breakfast that was around for over 30 yrs - zoning requirements, safety standards, unexpected inspections. That was hard enough for the city to keep straight - STRs could never be monitored as needed. They still aren’t.

What happened was the city council continued to make exceptions to out of state corporate owners.

I mean, yeah people are allowed to live in the city proper now because a lot of those short-term rental people had to sell. And also, it means that my neighborhood is not all short-term rentals. I live with people again.

Not really the right question imo. Landlords won't lower the rent for much of any reason. The question should be did the average rent increase slower than it would have otherwise. not really something you can ask on tiktok

The apartment downstairs from me was a STR. My rent has remained the same for 2 years. I fully believe it’s because they lost the str permit and. I was scared my apartment would be turned into a STR too.

My problem with what they did was gave them permits to people who are not registered to vote in the city of New Orleans. If you work, or registered to vote in the city you definitely should get first dibs

Of course nearly zero actual restrictions apply to commercial zoned properties, most with 4+ units and fully mixed in among all our residential neighborhoods 🙄
