People don’t realize that disability and chronic illnesses are likely to occur with old age. I work at a nursing home and the majority of the residents at my job have a disability or a chronic illness regardless of if they’re independent individuals or dependent individuals.

I don’t think people realize how high of a possibility it is to have a disable child. If born with a disability, it can take a child up to 3 years for it to present/be diagnosed. I didn’t know this till I had a child.

And the mother was an amputee… I know people who have children who are born 100% normal, and something tragic happened like brain injury, and the child has a disability… I’m convinced that some of these people who comment like that are just so young or have never had children

I work with medically complex children (from congenital disorders/diseases to tumors to MVAs) that require long term care. People don’t understand the power of what they are saying. These attitudes are harmful for all of us in the end.

But you know that we can’t/won’t have a better baseline of care so why even put a new human being through that and you know you can’t stop it?

This so frustrating. No one can truly prepare for a disabled child. You don't know that [their needs] will become unbearable until it happens. Never mind that many of their disabilities (particularly high need autism w/ comorbidities Like significant intellectual disabilities) aren't apparent in utero. Support (even in the best states) isn't enough and they're are many valid variables they go into why people keep pregnancies. A person's faith / moral compass as factors matters. Give people grace.

FACTS. My vibrant, independent mother, in the PRIME OF HER EARLY 60s, was diagnosed with Bulbar Onset ALS. Rendering her, within 3 months, disabled. Before she was ready to retire AND something that she never would have imagined in her wildest dreams. AND THERE WAS NO HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT/CARETAKING OPTIONS THAT WERE NOT COMPLETELY OUT OF POCKET. We need better services that our government provides us. It should be ILLEGAL to REJECT CARE for people who have disabilities. They can happen to anyone of us at the drop of the hat.

Completely agree. This topic is a slippery slope into eugenics. We have to be very cognizant on how we approach it and highlight that lack of resources available rather than diminishing the value on someone’s life due to ability.

I wasn’t diagnosed with my chronic illness (Crohns) until I was 17 years old…went from being “seemingly” healthy to in the hospital wks at a time, living w/ a pic line and jp drain and feeding bag…three bowel resection surgeries over an 11 yr span. People have no idea how their child (or they) will develop. We could ALL be disabled at any point in our development.

Everything devolves into antinatalist rhetoric from the masses. They think they’re being clever but they really just don’t want more human brought into this world

A little tmi from me but I had my father become disable when I was in 4th grade. So if people cant even imagine their child being disabled, I would hate to see how they react when its someone in close proximity. Disability access/rights are the also those who can become disabled which is literally all of us! Not to also mention we just seen a massive cut to medicaid where over a 11 million people have lost their access to healthcare. People really dont think about how precious and how easy it can flip on you

I said the same exact thing on threads. And don’t kill me for this opinion… But I think people like seeing other people suffer because it allows them to criticize and feel better about themselves and whatever they have going on. 🤷🏾♀️so many people want to feel superior to others.
