@justonthespectrum: Whining is not his usual way to express wants and needs, and it doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it doesn’t go unchecked. Even though he’s nonspeaking, he has lots of ways to communicate, like gestures, his device, and ASL, and we always guide him back to using those. When the whining starts, I remind him, “That’s not how we communicate,” by pointing out the difference of “bad” and “good” communication. Then we practice the words he can use. Tonight… He said “want” and added “2 minutes” to ask for more time before bed… spontaneously! That kind of spontaneous, two-word combo is a big deal!
