Having autism doesn’t make you a c*nt. You can be, and that’s lovely for you. But using your diagnosis as an excuse for bad behavior is toxic

omg. like the "I have autism I can't help it" gives "Im brutally honest" like? I have autism but I've never had those specific problems... I've had social problems but being extremely rude was never one of them, it was more so being awkward... ik autism is different for everyone but still

The thing a lot of audhd people aren’t grasping when they complain about social norms that don’t come naturally to them is that putting in the effort to learn social norms and perform them is an act of respect. If you don’t respect someone, you don’t bother, but then that person is going to know you don’t give a shit about them. Putting in effort to do something that seems arbitrary to you but means something to other people is literally just being nice. “Maybe I’m too autistic for this” no, you’re just an asshole who thinks things you don’t immediately “get” are beneath you and have no function. As an autistic person sometimes I’ll say something meant as a compliment or neutral comment and don’t realize it’s rude but if it’s brought to my attention I APOLOGIZE and then I EXPLAIN WHAT I MEANT and then I LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE and DONT DO IT AGAIN !!! Autism isn’t an excuse for being a cunt just as it’s not an excuse for not doing the dishes

As an autistic woman this shit pisses me off! It’s always the self diagnosis is valid girlies who want to act like autistic people can never improve themselves and naturally act like malignant narcissists. Stop aligning yourselves with me! This is a you problem!!

“brutal honesty” is also a problem. Seems like people have convinced themselves that they are insightful and that the truth has to be delivered as harsh and unpalatable.

As an officially diagnosed autistic person and autism advocate: you couldn’t be more correct. Also, you’re one of my favorite people on this app.

You definitely read too far into her comment. Im autistic and objectively, what she said about you being insecure, is that not a possibility?…. Autistic ppl unfortunately assume that other ppl are as straightforward as we are. You’re saying she’s shading you, and that she should know social cues in regards to that, but autistic ppl are literally BAD at social cues….. we are face value ppl bc things go over our head and we are always misunderstood or misunderstood other ppl, frequently…

yes. there's a difference between wanting grace when you make a mistake and choosing to do that thing over and over.

My friends have had the grace to pull me aside and say, “hey maybe don’t say that bc xyz…” and I trust them so I learn from them. It’s %100 a learnable skill - even kids with higher needs on the spectrum can learn how to be “polite”. It just may take some more instruction since it’s no innate or the same for everyone. Also…passive aggressive jabs are engrained in many cultures unfortunately but you don’t *have* to be that way.
