As a teacher, I genuinely don’t think people will fully realise the damage social media is doing to children’s developing brains until it’s too late. It’s not just about the risk of being exposed to inappropriate content, though that’s worrying enough… it’s about what constant exposure to fast paced, high stimulation media is doing to their attention spans, problem solving skills and ability to connect in the real world. Children today are growing up on a steady stream of rapid content colours, sounds, flashing images and dopamine triggering algorithms. My classroom often feels like a come down from that high (and I teach 8yr olds). They seem distracted, restless and disinterested in anything that doesn’t move as fast as the content they consume online. Conversations are harder to hold, thhey struggle with focus, say “I’m bored” within minutes or ask “What’s next?” before they’ve even started. I don’t believe technology or social media are inherently bad, they’re tools and like any tool, it’s how we use them that matters but, we have definitely lost the balance. Children need space to be bored, to reflect, to listen, to solve problems without an immediate answer provided by a screen. They need to practise dialogue, sketch ideas, get things wrong and try again. These slower, more human experiences build resilience, self-confidence, and the ability to think deeply, which in my opinion no app or algorithm can replace. ✌🏼
