@millieodegard: The question of how to write intelligent characters can be a big and daunting one, but here are some things I like to keep in mind when writing intelligent characters. #writing #writingtips #authortok #writersoftiktok
I ask ChatGPT to rewrite the dialogue to be as real world accurate as possible, especially for my lawyer character.

Uh no not at all bc characters have a second to think but authors can think on it for weeks

all fine and well, but imo the real key to writing characters more intelligent than the writer, is the ability to work backwards.
Come up with a clever solution, then build the problem around it.

Great point! And I’d also like to add- how much of their knowledge needs to be revealed to the audience explicitly vs implicitly

You can make a secondary character much smarter by making the pov character not understand a word they are saying.

I write characters that are more intelligent than me (richer) by adding money (richer) and education (richer)

Intelligence is relative to I’m World ability. That’s why an author can write a scientist but fail chemistry.

Also, a lot of intelligence is not simple volume of information. If they process information rapidly, just say "he had already come to the answer before I even understood the question", the same way you would write someone who runs faster than you. If they synthesize information well, just have them mutter "but then that means" a lot. If they are really good at making plans, just have their plans always work, and have catch phrases to indicate that they already took care of all the plot holes off screen.

My character, Brutus Claymore, was a medical student, spoke various languages, held PI licenses in most States, possessed a rich vocabulary, and many other accomplishments. He’s definitely smarter than me lol

Your character doesn’t need to know more than you. You just need to know more than the characters and gift your main character with your foreknowledge

Also there are different kinds of “intelligent” (if you’re genuinely struggling) Good advice Millie XD

Also, I think it’s very important to showcase different types of intelligence that each character has. In my story, my character Tom is an inventor and he sees things from a very logical point of view, meaning he most wants a plan. But my other character, Soleil, is a thief so she’s moreso impulsive and she thinks off the top of her head. They clash most times because their type of intelligence clashes.

I’d settle for running it by a toddler and seeing if they think it makes sense. So much writing for tv where characters are supposed to be above average intelligence but acting like they have brain damage

I think characters can be far more intelligent than the writers. I think anime and manga do this quite well. They just show the characters being smart through how they interact with other characters. (Shikamaru & Hidan from Naruto is a great example of this.)
