@josephrickettsphoto: The river chub is an often overlooked fish by the average creek and river enjoyer in the Southeastern US. However, this fish plays an important role in freshwater rivers and streams. Male chubs, known by their pink, tubercle-encrusted heads, will gather pebbles and stones in their mouth and stack them into mounds in the hopes of attracting a female to spawn with. However, dozens of other fish species also depend on the chub mounds to spawn as well. The loosely stacked rocks simultaneously provide protection and oxygenation for eggs amidst the rushing currents. So yes, essentially chubs facilitate mass fish “orgies” for the overall benefit of their aquatic environment - which is seriously hardcore. Pretty wild that a single fish has such a positive impact on its local community. Full video on YouTube!
