So often they aren’t covered by insurance. Even with Medicare, it’s mostly limited to diabetics or individuals with kidney disease.

My son has an outpatient dietician! He has gastrointestinal issues and we do everything over the phone. They work under the gastroenterology team and do inpatient and outpatient!

The problem with dietitians and nutritionist is they have a stigma of being judgmental not helpful.

You can consult dieticians. I’ve seen it as an inpatient nurse and I had once consulted to monitor my TPN when I had severe gastroparesis. What they need to allow dieticians to change TPN orders and they could be used a lot more.

In my experience a lot of endocrinology offices have dieticians/nutritionists in-house for various chronic dx in conjunction with the specialist services. I’m sure it’ll vary state by state but Medicaid plans often have at least some contracted w/them.

Primary care should be referring to nutritionists/dietician’s.

Absolutely they’re underutilized. Just like 99% of ancillary health care professionals that are not nurses or doctors

Is anyone going to ask what the income of the patient is. As we understand what healthy eating is but cannot always afford

I absolutely love that you are willing to even explore using another avenue to help patients. So many doctors just tell us to eat more protein, less calories and move more. Having doctors willing to find ways to help us is AMAZING!

I had a friend ask her pcm for a referral to a dietitian and she even said she was self pay. He told her no way just eat less and control your habits (she was recovering from a eating disorder too) 😡

The day my endo referred me to a Dietitian was absolutely life changing. My endo took the time to educate me and opened my eyes to the benefits of such consultation. Hands down best intervention ever! 💗

a lot of patients dont have dietary coverage. I work with an RD on a daily basis, I have been trying for 6 months to get a patient coverage who had a complete colectomy and has never had dietary counseling with an RD

Not much is covered. Diabetes, kidney disease but sometimes certain stages only, weight management, referrals were non existent when I was in a hospital so I worked in dialysis where I was part of a team.

Recently started a GLP-1. Best thing my provider did was to refer to a dietician. The referral was to a dietitian group. All telemedicine. Insurance covers this.

As an emergency nurse, I feel like I am consistently educating patients on diet, and utilization if dieticians. Dieticians should be an essential part of a patient’t medical team, and patients should be required an educational course on their diagnosis prior to discharge for new onset GI and endocrine diagnosis.

I’m a dietitian and we do A LOT of things! Inpatient, outpatient, clinics, critical care, food science, you name it. But in healthcare we are not well compensated. We reduce remission rates, decrease LOS, diagnose malnutrition, keep intubated patients fed, teach cooking classes, decrease mortality rates etc etc but are offered peanuts for salaries.

I love an RD and we consult them a lot on inpatient peds but not nearly enough in my experience for adults with diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease. (Which is not to say they are never consulted, but they could be consulted so much more, especially in preventive care).
