My fmc is very morally grey because she is so willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive that she’s ended up in the army and kills innocents so she doesn’t die instead 😭

What about one who starts as a warlord, killing everyone who stands in the way to his goal, after nearly achieving it, meets something that is a more powerful version of him(in the story it’s his fathers right hand man) who does everything in their power to make him lose control which he inevitably does, proving how strong he is by also killing this one person followed by a third of his kingdom, finally getting stopped(barely) by his sister, after that he creates a rule for his entire kingdom that basically says how they will never attack unless attacked, he also basically created a no kill rule for himself, a few hundred years later, a war starts(a friend of his decided that they don’t like him anymore and decided to do a few things to basically get the whole world against him), this war destroys everything that he worked for, he watches his empire burn, his friends and family die and his army turn to dust, he is hit by grief only after seeing his pet(that he has had since he was a kid, both of them basically immortal) take it’s final breath, he then goes dark, just vanishes, years later he comes back and wages war on the whole world, him against everyone and wins

IMO Morally Grey is woefully misunderstood and therefore under utilised I lot of novels. Morally Grey doesn't mean brooding or growly, it's about that ruthlessness, that willingness to do whatever it takes to meet your goals which have to be attached to the character's moral framework. And I 💯 agree this could and ✨should✨ apply to both heroes and villains to keep the characters interesting

what level? I know my supporting male lead character will threaten people who even so much as do anything he doesn't like to his prince. He has no problems playing dirty to win a fight either.

My FMC lets the villain monologue so she can distract them. Then immediately says, “you know what’s the best part about talking to egotistic a**holes? If you ask them questions, they talk for-f***ing-ever.” Then punches them in the face

You know, my big hearted little pixie who is not afraid to take action was already trending that way. This has inspired me to push them right over the edge into ruthless territory. It will be a fun and shocking contrast to their normally bubbly and caring persona when they literally do not hesitate to take out anything/one that stands in their way.

My main character executed a major villain mid monologue because he had seen the villain comit an atrocity years prior. It was already public and forgotten about so I figured why not. Do bad for good.

i have this dragoness character that is the leader of her "nest" (aka, species) and she has arranged marriages to promote the sector those male represent. if they do something she doesn't agree of, they're sent to a better life, no redemption chance to come around. most of her people don't fear her, the others respect her for being ruthless 😌

But... that is the unspoken deal: Hero lets the villain monologue and when the villain captures the hero he has to put him/her on a ridiculous, lethal and slow killing system and leave the room. So the hero can escape. 😅😂

MC stabs him in the Achilles heel after he slit her throat. Yes. She walked into the trap, so she could land the killing blow.

My FMC interrupts a monologue she’s not even there by tackling my villain. All because she sees the MMC with a black eye and knows he did it.

My near future mystery has 2 female protagonists. One is morally gray. But earlier you wanted softer female protagonists. She is not soft. She is more of a do-whatever-it-takes to get what she wants type. 👽🛸✌️☮️
