This is so timely. I saw Dijonai Carrington on the stud budz life for WNBA all star this weekend talk about how her partner NaLyssa Smith was the man in their relationship/provider/protector and I CRINGED. I was like it’s giving cishereropatriarchy 😭

Physical strength isn’t inherently toxic. And it isn’t inherently masculine. And womanhood isn’t equivalent to physical weakness. Historically, Black women have been masculinized because of their perceived (or actual, see: Castor Semenya) physical strength. Eventually, we’ll get to the point in the syllabus where we accept that gender is largely useless except insofar as it is a tool for enshrining oppressive hierarchies. Gender, like race, needs to be reckoned with and abolished.

I noticed that these online discussions is very much so online a lot of masc women have very varied preferences that do not hold up online. Tik tok creates bubbles for very simplified generalizations and no nuance. To your example about the woman who couldn’t pick up that woman some masc woman do take pride in doing that and some don’t. I say treat them as the individual they are and their preferences

From my personal experience, I think there is lack of understanding of what masculinity and misogyny is, and because of that, ppl unknowingly perform and perpetuate harmful behaviors. In 2008, I was at a queer event with all Black queer women and mentioned starting a basketball league. The woman who hosted the event, said she wanted to join. Because of my ignorance, I laughed and said she could be a cheerleader. I was trying to be funny because she presents more femininely, and she called me a misogynist. It was my first time hearing the word and it made me more mindful of how I internalize stereotypes and misogyny.

i think we should stop equating personality with presentation. i know a lot of feminine presenting women who are very “masculine” in terms of behavior but no one deems them toxic. it’s an onion of a conversation.

I’ve had this convo including enby transmascs. It’s interesting how we expect and demonize masculine traits especially thru such a narrow lens

The more comfortable I got in my queerness the more I started defining my femininity for me. Like you said, queer ness is redefining masculinity and femininity for us. Defining relationships that work for us not the heteronormative!

Yes absolutely!! And conflating masculinity itself and stud/masc identities with physical strength/certain physical capabilities alienates anyone who may be living with disability, it creates a benchmark of exclusivity that is inherently problematic!!

Would love to see you do a live stream to further extend this conversation. Because you literally have said something that I've always thought and didn't know how to properly articulate it. 🔥
